August 28 Pine Cleanup from Walker Bridge to Elm Flats

Published on 8/28/2014

People: John & me, Tracie, Jackie, Marlene, Barb & Mike, Linda

Quote of the day: " Wow, we used to fill our cockpits with trash in the old days.  It's kind of nice that we don't find as much stuff any more".  This time we filled four very large bags.
Award for log jam climber of the day goes to John
Best spotters awards go to Linda and Jackie, who allowed us to go in for items BEFORE we passed them.
Special thanks to Mike, who is always willing to be sweep.  Barb often kept him company.
Even though Marv didn't paddle, he was there in spirit - and he brought Marlene and picked her up.
Thanks to PRPC, who provided us with a canoe and shuttle
It always surprises me to see that everyone finds stuff, even when we think we have scoured the landscape.  This time around the water was exceptionally clear, so we were able to stab a lot of old cans left on the bottom on the river.  The section from Walker to Elm Flats is really pretty and not used that much.  We had to schlep all the trash past our lunch stop at Lincoln since it had no receptacles.
We found a matched pair of Nike sneakers - about 1/2 mile apart, with the laces tied nice and snug - but not on the guy's feet.  One of my former students is Senior Director of Marketing for Nike; I will send him the photo!
Discovery of the day: the hatch areas of plastic kayaks cannot be relied upon to keep everything dry.
A delightful trip - great weather and happy people helping out Mother Nature.
And she rewarded us with a fabulous Eastern Hog-Nosed snake sighting at the takeout!
