May 25 - Manistee - Hodenpyl to Red Bridge

Published on 5/26/2014
More hikers/backpackers than paddlers were out on the Manistee today from Hodenpyl to Red Bridge.

Our group of thirteen got off to a rocky start before we even put in, with one PFD missing (later found at home) and one case of fainting, but thereafter all was gloriously smooth paddling in faster than usual current. Lots of busy waterfalls coming down from the hillside on river left and, of course, the marsh marigolds were in bloom too. There are a number of spots that could work for lunch along this stretch. Near the end we came upon a pair of black-billed Trumpeter Swans, the largest North American waterfowl.

All agreed this was a perfect day: leaders John & Lois, Marv & Marlene, Carol Smith, Sharon Taylor, Jack Kurtz, Sara, Kati Flees, Tracie, Sue & Gerry, written by Jocelyn.
