Trip Reports

May 12 Main AuSable River

Published on 5/12/2012

A group of 10 paddlers (Deena, Judy & Fred, Lois & John, Betty & Mike, Marlene & Marv, and myself) led by Lois & John traveled down the AuSable.  We started out at Penrod's in Grayling and took out at Stephan Bridge.  The weather was perfect for spring paddling, despite activity from Camp Grayling which imitated thunder.  Temps were in the 60s with clouds in the morning and sunshine by early afternoon.  We shared the river with a few other canoes and kayaks and quite a few fisherman.

The marsh marigolds were gorgeous. A few ducks and birds were spotted along the way.

Stats from my GPS showed we traveled 9.6 river miles (Penrod's website lists the distance as 13 miles) in 3 1/2 hours including lunch. We averaged 4 mph.

Mike stayed dry despite his run-in with a raised log crossing part of the river. A fisherman in waders was nice enough to assist in the extrication. Deena retrieved Mike's sunscreen.

Fred demonstrated another one of his successful dry feet launches after lunch. This is also known as the otter entry, but I must say his version has a lot more splash. I was very impressed but will not be imitating it soon.

My first time on the AuSable and I can't wait to do it again.
