Here's a wonderful opportunity to get out of town before the holiday weekend, and enjoy a local river. This little stream is one of the gems of Northwest Michigan. In the heart of the summer, it could be filled with rental canoes, but on this day we probably won't meet many other river users. Our time on the river to Deadstream Road should be about 3 hours.
We'll begin paddling at Veteran's Park campground, on the south side of US-31. We can go out for lunch afterwards.
Everyone should bring a boat, paddle, PFD, ropes to tie on the bow and stern, water bottle and a snack. Don't forget your sunhat and sunglasses with a retainer. Bring a waterproof bag with a complete change of clothing, just in case of an unexpected swim break.
Driving directions: Platte River (Upper section)
Veteran's Park campground, on the south side of US-31. It's about eight miles west of Interlochen Corners, just west of the bridge where US-31 crosses the Platte River, just past the Fish Hatchery and Thompsonville Highway.
