The South Branch of the AuSable flows through the Mason Tract, a sanctuary that has been donated to the state and is set aside as a natural area. Paddlers of all levels are welcome to help us tidy up this beautiful stream.  The water is fairly shallow (with a sand bottom) and has exceptionally clear water.  It is warm enough to dive into if you can’t reach an errant pop can directly from your boat.

We will paddle from Chase Bridge to Smith Bridge, including a lunch stop at the site of Durant’s Castle.  There will probably be another stop at the open air chapel alongside the river.  The travel time from Traverse City is about an hour and a half, but it's worth it!

Because this river is so gorgeous, it gets lots of usage during the summer months. Unfortunately, that also means that it gets far too much trash dropped into it.  We will paddle downstream, picking up stuff as we go.  We plan to make a full day affair of a trip that normally takes only three hours.

This trip would be ideal for perfecting your river skills, AND helping out the environment.  In the past, we have taken along small children to help with this cleanup.

We meet at 10:00 and the shuttle is at 10:15.

Directions to Chase Bridge are on the TAPC website.
