This is one of the prettiest sections of the Big Manistee, with majestic scenery on both sides. We will pass below the North Country National Scenic Trail. There is little development along the banks, and the views of the hills surrounding the river should be truly spectacular. The Manistee River is almost 100 feet wide in this section.
The water will be cold and fast, and the banks may be muddy, but it will be good for all of us to be out on the river again this year. All participants should bring along a waterproof bag with a complete change of clothing. Please wear appropriate footwear that you can use to step into the water.
We will meet in mid-morning, stop for a lunch break halfway through the trip, which should total about four hours. Driving directions are below.
Manistee River (US-131)
Head southeast of TC via Supply Road or M-113, and turn right (south) on US-131. About 2.5 miles south of the intersection of 113 and 131, you will approach the roadside rest area just north of the Manistee River on the east (left) side of the highway. Drive into the rest area, and follow the signs to the river access at the south end of the parking area. Please do not block the access while we are unloading boats and gear.
